Pilgrims all

About 40 pilgrims of all ages from All Saints joined the annual diocesan pilgrimage in honour of St Birinus yesterday. On what was probably the hottest day of the year so far some completed the 10 mile trek from Churn Knobb to Dorchester Abbey, others completed the five mile shorter route. Refreshments were provided along the way by the village churches pilgrims passed through. After a celebratory service in the Abbey the day concluded with a wonderful bar-b-que in the Abbey grounds.
St Birinus was a Benedictine monk sent from Italy in the seventh century to preach the gospel to the West Saxons. He baptised their king at the confluence of the Thame and the Thames where Dorchester Abbey now stands.
