Bob Boyd CBE

Rector, Revd David Hodgson writes: We had news yesterday that Bob Boyd died peacefully in hospital in Exeter on Sunday morning. He was 88 years old. He received the sacrament from the hospital chaplain minutes before he passed away. The funeral service will be held at All Saints on Friday 4th May at 1.30pm in the context of a Eucharist.
Bob was a regular worshipper at All Saints for over 30 years following his arrival in Wokingham with his wife Carrie, after retiring from the Overseas Civil Service where he gave distinguished service, achieving the position of Auditor-General of Zambia. He was awarded the CBE in recognition of his services. He also gave faithful service in the Anglican Communion, serving as Provincial Treasurer and Secretary of the Church of the Province of Central Africa. He was a governor of the United Society of the Propagation of the Gospel (USPG)and remained active in promoting the work of the Society. At All Saints Bob had served as PCC Treasurer and latterly, following Carrie’s death, as Verger. After retiring as Verger and upon the relocation of the Meteorological Office Bob moved a few years ago to Exeter to be nearer to his sons; Mike who moved with the Met Office, and Robert who had relocated to Devon shortly before that.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
Bob’s dedication to and concern for the well-being of the Church and his wonderful sense of humour will be remembered by me.

Bob was also Patron and a past President of Hurst Bowling Club. As a skip he could seem fearsome at the other end of the rink but took equal criticism in good humour. He has witten two books of his memories but I am not sure that they were ever published. I recall that he mentioned some time with the local council and was instrumental in obtaining Cantly Field for the community.
