I wrote to the BBC by email this morning to complain bitterly about its refusal to broadcast a television appeal for humanitarian aid to Gaza. The appeal is being made by the Disasters Emergency Committee; which co-ordinates appeals for large-scale humanitarian disasters on behalf of Action Aid, British Red Cross, CAFOD, CARE International UK, Christian Aid, Concern Worldwide, Help the Aged, Islamic Relief, Merlin, Oxfam, Save the Children, Tearfund, World Vision.
The BBC’s refusal means no other British broadcaster will air the appeal either since they have an agreement to act together in these matters.
As The Guardian editorial points out appeals for war zone victims are nothing new; quoting the example of the appeal for Vietnam war victims which Peter Snow presented in 1967!
I made the point in my complaint that if this destruction hads been caused by an earthquake there would be no hesitation to broadcast an appeal. Regardless of the cause, the people of Gaza are suffering.
I can assume only that the BBC has swallowed Israeli proganda whole and believes that all Gaza residents – including the 400 children that have been killed presumably – are terrorists.
